Its harder for the genuine, hard working, full time Taxi Driver to earn a living now in Inverness.

Especially with the Radio Dues up to £120 per week on top of the ridiculous cost of fuel.

"Highland Council makes a small fortune out of the taxis in the city and yet gives nothing back, in fact they keep taking away.

Recently, I had to tour the city centre four times for some 20 minutes as I could not get a space on a rank, adding to the congestion and my running costs.

I am having to work 20 hours a week more than I had to two years ago just to make the same money.

The traffic system has added greatly to this. I used to be able to turn right up Fraser Street from Bank Street, but not now – I have to go along Bank Street and up Academy Street. I can turn left up Fraser Street but not right. From the day this started, the traffic at the bottom end of Academy Street has come to a standstill.

They will turn round and say it is to relieve congestion on Queensgate, but if the traffic wardens had been doing their job and upholding the Road Traffic Act and had stopped private motorists going up Fraser St, then this congestion would have been reduced dramatically.

Now at any given time you can count between six and eight taxis trying to get up Academy Street because of this, causing congestion, plus adding to the users' fares.

We hear a lot about the poor buses. When will the council notice that 75 per cent of the city centre congestion is caused by the buses often travelling at 20 per cent of their capacity? If a bus cannot get into the stop at the Post Office, they will just stop and block the whole centre up and a traffic warden will stand and joke with the driver whilst all this goes on.

One more point. If the traffic lights in Academy Street are now co-ordinated, as we are told, why do we need on occasions a warden at the bottom of the street directing the traffic? The lights are a mess and anyone could take five minutes to prove this."
